Forest Industrial Materials Division aims for the development of advanced wood-based materials and acceleration of assigning other future values of forest products. Our researchers include multi-scale studies on bioenergy production from lab to pilot, standardization on safety evaluation technologies of biomass-based solid and liquid fuels, and development of bioplastic, and advanced utilization technology of wood components(i.e. lignin, essential oil, etc). In addition, to add more value to forest resources, the team members conduct innovative researches on pulp chemistry and its chemical modifications. As the next generation of biomaterial, the application studies of nano fibrillated cellulose are also ongoing with the development of a mass production process.
To improve the efficiency in energy use of forest resources, we conduct a wide range of researches on the production process of biofuels for transport based on lignocellulosic biomass. In this context, we have ongoing research topics related to improving the environmental impacts of forest biomass-based energy sources, including the highly efficient combustion system, re-utilization of emission gas, and fine dust reduction. In addition, we contribute to supply safe wood biomass fuels through safety evaluation and standardization studies of lignocellulosic solid biomass fuels.

Our research on pulp and paper aims for fundamental and practical R&D that can reflect the industrial actuality and future, such as database construction on pulping properties of various wood resources and development of new materials based on pulp or paper to replace petrochemical materials. In addition, we focus on conversion technology of by-products into value-added materials in the papermaking process, advanced utilization of recycled paper resources, and research work on National Standards for securement of national competitiveness.

We are researching nanocellulose derived from wood to respond to the sustainable future. In this regard, applied research of nanocellulose to high-tech material fields such as electronic devices, biomedical engineering, and nanocomposites is being explored based on principle studies for the production and chemical treatment of nanocellulose.
