Forest Products and Industry Department

Forest Products and Industry Department focuses on research about wood industry information, wood culture, wood engineering, wood architecture, wooden bio-energy, and forest industrial materials to promote the sustainable use of forest resources and the wood industry. We aim to build a cascading utilization of wood and support technology and policy development.

Wood Engineering Division has developed the following technologies for more valuable, beautiful, and safe use of wood; database of wood properties, improvement of wood material properties, development of engineering wood, design value for timber construction, securing structural safety of the wood structure, and improvement of the environmental performance of a wood building.

Research on Wood Properties and Modification

In order to promote using domestic wood, researches on wood properties and modification are ongoing through improving durability and developing eco-friendly preservative treatment and the maintenance manual. In addition, we are conducting research on anatomical information of wood for identification, and developing drying and sawing technology.

Research on Engineered Wood and Wood-based Composites

In order to expand the use of eco-friendly wood as a material for the building industry, research focuses on enhancing wood-based composites while developing next-generation structural engineered wood with an industrial production base.

Research on securing structural safety of wooden structures

To secure the structural safety of wooden structures, research focuses on the development of structural standards such as the seismic design of wooden structures, calculation of design values for structural timber and engineered timber, and the development of medium- and large-sized wooden structure system.
