Program 2. Establishment of a virtuous cycle system for forest resources and activation of forest management

□ Major outcomes
2-1. Resources, market, regional economy based forestry management strategy research
·The improvement on effectiveness of forest basic plan and top priority projects have been derived referring to the long-term prospects in forest, forestry and mountain villages sectors, and forestland classification standard and management system improvement based on the conservation and utilization of forestland have been proposed.
·The social, cultural, and economic levels and characteristics of mountain villages have been identified, and the importance of definition revision on mountain villages and necessity of mountain village basic survey system have been clarified. In addition, promotion plan of local forestry management entities has been proposed by identifying the demand for forestry education and training programs and supporting projects for forestry management entities.
·The number of forest industry workers according to the forest industry special classification has been estimated, and the survey and analysis of job satisfaction for workers and periodic forest and forestry trends have been provided to policymakers.

2-2. Tree advancement and development of seedling production technology
·In order to promote promising timber species that reflect social and economic demand, over 65 trees were selected from the subtropical species Machilus thunbergii. The growth conditions and limiting factors for Liriodendron tulipifera plantations were characterized to establish a bio-circulation forest and support forest seedling policies. By applying spatial analysis of growth traits in a Larix kaempferi plantation, the accuracy of genetic testing was improved.
·In order to establish a production system of clonal plants based on somatic embryogenesis for clonal plants of larch, cell lines with superior regeneration capacity were selected. For increasing the production efficiency of clonal plants, germination of somatic embryos was attempted using temporary immersion bioreactors. Based on this research technical support and distribution of somatic embryos are continuously supplied for each province forest research institute.
·In order to establish a stable production and supply base for high-quality superior seedlings, the standard model for the forest automatically controlled greenhouse was established, and the optimal conditions for each stage such as single processing, harvesting, storage, transportation, and thawing were investigated.

2-3. Reinforcement of creating, silvicultural practice and harvesting technologies for timber resources
·In order to develop infrastructure efficiency technology to reduce wood production costs, an on-site applicability evaluation of forest road design methods in connection with landing areas was conducted. The alignment improvement of forest roads and the possibility of utilizing mechanized operation spaces were investigated, and facility standards of landing areas connected with forest roads for stability were proposed.
·According to the analysis of“forestry training courses”, there was a limit to improving workers' knowledge and skills. Therefore we provide a modified training program for assisting a filling knowledge and technique. The winch-assisted harvester trafficability and reduction effect of soil compaction on steep slopes were evaluated. In order to winch-assisted system setting stump anchors, a load-resisting behavior and capacity for each diameter was analyzed.
·The seed inflow and distribution in the wood harvesting area were predicted using a seed dispersal model to select sites and to plan establishment of regeneration forests of major afforestation species. The density control work methods were developed by productivity analysis for natural regeneration seedling forests.
·In order to improve the efficiency of forest management for major oak forests and to prepare to tend that meets the management goals, management regimes for each product’s goal were developed using a stand density management diagram.
