To address global warming, the carbon sequestration is becoming an international issue. Korea Forest Service has launched the 5th National Forest Plan and aims to actively address the climate change.

Even in the winter season, the Korea Forest Service commenced the Forest Tending Project aiming to manage 208,000ha in 2008. The forest projects enhance the forest value and promotes re-use of the resources while providing employment opportunities.

The Forest Tending Project is becoming more and more significant. As the international pressure to decrease carbon emission is becoming intense based on the UNFCCC''s concerns on global warming, forest carbon sink is accredited.

"The Forest Tending Project will not only develop healthy forests but also address climate change issues"

As measures to acquire carbon sink, forest tending projects will be implemented until 2017 on 2.34 million ha. The government will also support plantatioin project on 2,500ha of unstocked land.

The Korea Forest Servive aims to developing carbon sink of 22 million tons which in effect will decrease the carbon emission by 3.7% until 2017 through Forest Tending and Urban Greening projects.

[Interview: Yoon Young-kyoon, DG of Forest Resources Policy Bureau]
"The role of forest is significant as it functions as a huge carbon sink."

The key projects of 5th National Forest Plan which will be implemented until 2017 includes climate change issues such as establishment of carbon inventory system and enhancement of the forest tending project as well as policies to develop and introduce new and renewable energies.
