Forest Disaster Management Division
Forest Disaster Management Division conducts research on preparing and scientifically responding to forest disasters caused by climate change. In the forest fire prevention and suppression research, we assess and predict forest fire occurrence risk according to the increase of combustibles in forests. In order to reduce forest fire damage, we have are developing algorithms for efficient fire prediction and establishing a system which swiftly detects forest fire sites. Also, a fire behavior prediction program is adopted in the field to protect people and cultural assets from forest fire. In order to combat landslide and other debris flows in urban areas, research on supporting systems for early warning and prevention of sediment disaster is underway. As part of structural countermeasures, we are developing a decision making support system to plan and design erosion control structures. Also, to reduce damages caused by tsunami, the Division analyzes the effect of coastal disaster prevention forest and develops a guideline for the establishment and management of such forest.
